Antonelli learns of Bahrain GP front-row promotion live on camera — and his reaction says it all

Kimi Antonelli found out he would start the Bahrain Grand Prix from third place not in the garage, not from his engineers, but live in front of a microphone — and his unguarded reaction became one of the more charming moments of the qualifying day.

The Mercedes driver had endured a difficult session at Bahrain International Circuit, finishing five-tenths behind polesitter Max Verstappen and believing he had qualified fourth. When Formula 1 interviewer Lawrence Barretto mentioned he was still in a solid position — P3 — Antonelli’s response came before the information had fully registered.

“Yeah, I mean it’s… you know, definitely… Oh wait, I’m starting P3 tomorrow?” he said, a smile spreading across his face as the penny dropped.

Barretto confirmed the news: a grid-place penalty applied to Isack Hadjar, who had used his seventh internal combustion engine of the season, had bumped the Italian teenager up one position.

“Oh! Oh, that’s not too bad!” Antonelli replied.

The moment offered a rare glimpse of a driver genuinely surprised by good news — a contrast to the composed, measured figure Antonelli has largely presented across what has been a highly impressive sophomore season at Mercedes. The championship leader had gone into qualifying carrying some disappointment after a difficult Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, where he crashed in Q1 before recovering to finish fifth from 16th on the grid.

With the grid position confirmed, Antonelli shifted his focus to Sunday’s race, acknowledging that Red Bull hold an edge in outright pace while Ferrari remain close.

“I think these are races where race pace is even more important,” he said. “I still believe that Red Bull have the upper edge on pace and Ferrari is very close. But we’ll do our best. I think track position is going to be very important and we’ll try to manage those tyres the best way possible and then try to — if we can fight for the win, great. If we have to settle for P2 or P3, we’ll take that.”
