Antonelli eyes youngest-ever F1 title at COTA as championship chance opens in Austin

Kimi Antonelli could clinch the 2026 Formula 1 world championship as early as this Sunday's United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver leads by 102 points over team-mate George Russell but needs a win and specific results from rivals to seal the title this weekend.

Kimi Antonelli arrives at the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas this weekend with a first, if narrow, opportunity to clinch the 2026 Formula 1 world championship and become the series’ youngest ever world champion at just 20 years old.

The Mercedes driver holds a 102-point lead over team-mate George Russell and can wrap up the title in Austin if he wins Sunday’s race, Russell finishes ninth or lower, and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finishes no higher than fifth. Antonelli himself acknowledged the scenario is unlikely, but said he would not let the possibility change his approach.

“It definitely is crazy if you think about it, but that’s why I won’t think about it,” Antonelli said. “Something catastrophic to others needs to happen and for me it needs to be a perfect weekend, which is unlikely to happen.”

The Italian, who has taken eight grand prix victories and 14 podiums in 2026, said he and race engineer Peter Bonnington — known in the paddock as Bono — agreed before the Austin weekend to maintain the same mindset that has driven him to the top of the standings.

“We had a meeting with Bono this morning and we said to just have fun and always have the same mindset as I had all year,” he said. “One race at a time and just try to do the best I can every race weekend and then we’ll see. But of course, if I do things well, then the result will come.”

Antonelli described a potential title as the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition, but was careful to keep his focus on the job at hand rather than the prize that could follow.

“It would be a dream, it’s something I’ve dreamt of since I was little. First of all to find myself in such a position is incredible,” he said. “But at the same time, I need to keep going, keep pushing and it’s not over yet. First we’ll try to finish the job properly and then we can enjoy the rest. But for sure, it will be an incredible achievement.”

Even if the stars do not align in Austin, Antonelli will have further opportunities across the Austin-Mexico-Brazil triple-header to secure what would be a historic championship.
