Alonso rules out January signing as Reece James faces weeks out after knee surgery
Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery and faces several weeks on the sidelines, but Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso says he expects the captain to return before the January transfer window opens, ruling out a replacement signing.
Xabi Alonso has moved to ease concerns over Chelsea’s transfer plans, insisting the club will not pursue a January replacement for Reece James after the captain underwent successful minor knee surgery that will sideline him for several weeks.
James, 26, suffered the setback in training ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Everton. Medical assessments at Cobham confirmed surgery was the required course of action, though the club described the procedure as minor and said James has already begun his rehabilitation.
“In the last training he had an injury, we wanted to be cautious and wait for the tests, the surgery has been successful,” Alonso said. “We don’t set timelines, but several weeks. It won’t be short — two or three weeks — it’ll be longer. We’ll see before Christmas and after Christmas, things need to be done properly. It’s a disappointment for everyone and him.”
When asked directly whether the injury would force Chelsea into the January market, Alonso was unequivocal. “No, I don’t think so. We expect him to be back some weeks before [January], let’s see — it’s not exact. He’s a very important player, the captain, an influence. Hopefully after this injury he’ll be available.”
James was absent from Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, having last featured in the 2-2 draw with Hull on 12 September. He had started the club’s first four Premier League fixtures of the season before that absence.
The England international has a well-documented injury history. He missed several spells last season with hamstring problems and, despite publicly dismissing questions about his fitness as “boring” before the World Cup, ended up sitting out two of England’s matches at the tournament with a strain.
A Chelsea statement confirmed the full picture: “Captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery. Reece has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase.”
