Alex Scott emerges as United's top midfield target as Ugarte faces suspected ACL blow
Manchester United have identified Bournemouth's Alex Scott as their most likely midfield signing this summer, while the club awaits confirmation on Manuel Ugarte's suspected ACL knee injury. Sandro Tonali was never a serious target, despite reports linking United to the Italy international.
Manchester United have moved Alex Scott to the top of their midfield shortlist this summer, with the 22-year-old Bournemouth midfielder now considered the most likely addition in the centre of the pitch. Arsenal are also tracking Scott, and Bournemouth are prepared to offer him a new contract, making the pursuit a competitive one. His Premier League experience is viewed as a significant asset inside Old Trafford.
United’s midfield recruitment strategy this window has shifted away from a like-for-like replacement for Casemiro. Rather than seeking a natural defensive midfielder, the club — under manager Michael Carrick — are targeting players capable of operating as either a No.6 or a No.8, provided they offer the physicality and technical quality to function in the Premier League. Scott is seen as fitting that profile.
Ederson, who will join from Atalanta once Brazil’s involvement in the World Cup concludes, is another example of that approach, with his box-to-box running and engine rated highly by the club’s recruitment staff. Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes were also considered earlier in the window before attention shifted.
United have also conducted background checks on Germany international Felix Nmecha, who has just been eliminated from the World Cup. Director of football Jason Wilcox has a pre-existing relationship with the Nmecha family from his time at Manchester City’s academy, where both Felix and his brother Lukas came through. However, interest has not progressed beyond those preliminary checks.
Aurélien Tchouaméni remains a remote possibility despite mixed signals from Real Madrid. United would be interested if the France international became available, but there has been no indication he will be placed on the market this summer.
On Sandro Tonali, United’s involvement has been overstated. The Italy international appeared on a broad data-driven longlist of potential targets late in the season, but no concrete talks were ever held and no approach was made to Newcastle, who accepted a fee of £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons from Tottenham.
The club is also waiting on further medical tests for Manuel Ugarte, with a suspected ACL injury casting doubt over the midfielder’s availability for the start of next season.
