Al-Ittihad rules out Walid Regragui, explores other options for manager role
Saudi club Al-Ittihad, searching for a manager after Sergio Conceiçao's departure, has not pursued Walid Regragui. According to Saudi media, no negotiations were ever initiated with the former Morocco national team coach.
Al-Ittihad will not turn to Walid Regragui to replace Sergio Conceiçao in the dugout. According to several Saudi media outlets, the Jeddah club has ruled out the former Morocco manager, and no negotiations were actually held between the two parties.
Regragui, 50, had been mentioned in recent weeks as a potential candidate for the position. Al-Ittihad, which finished the season in a disappointing fifth place in the Saudi Pro League, is exploring other options, whose names have not yet emerged.
The coach, a native of Corbeil-Essonnes, has been a free agent since early March, when he left the Morocco national team. Before taking charge of the Lions of the Atlas, he had managed two clubs in Morocco — Fath Union Sport and Wydad Casablanca — as well as Qatari club Al-Duhail.
While the Saudi avenue appears to be closing, Regragui would nonetheless retain strong standing in the region. However, according to reports following his departure from Morocco, his priority would be to join a European club for the first time in his managerial career.
